THE FOUR Cs AND MORE
GOOD TO KNOW
- “Asscher” is the name for a square-shaped emerald cut diamond. Like emerald cuts, Asscher cut diamonds feature a series of horizontal facets that form a step pattern. The GIA report for an Asscher cut diamond will typically call it “Square Emerald Cut.”
- Asscher cut diamonds have four straight sides and four smaller cropped corners.
- Like the rectangular emerald cut diamond, the Asscher’s optical effects mimic looking down an endless hall of mirrors.
- An Asscher cut diamond is less brilliant than other shapes.
- When weighing the Asscher cut versus the princess cut, consider the step-cut faceting of an Asscher cut diamond a sophisticated alternative to the more traditional sparkle of a princess cut.
- The Asscher cut features higher crown angles and a smaller table, with a geometric Art Deco look that appeals to antique lovers.
CARAT WEIGHT
- Square diamonds carry more weight in the bottom of the stone, where it does not add to the visual size appearance. That’s why Asscher cut diamonds often appear small for their carat weight compared to other shapes.
COLOR
GIA COLOR SCALE
- Asscher cut diamonds usually appear colorless through the I and J color grade range.
- An Asscher cut diamond with a high color grade reveals the beauty of the subtle step-patterned facets.
- Asscher cut diamonds do not mask lower color grades as well as other shapes and cutting styles, but don’t worry—at Kwiat, we do not offer stones that show obvious color flaws.
CLARITY
- The Asscher cut allows for a clear view into the heart of the diamond, but also exhibits inclusions to the naked eye more readily than other shapes.
- Kwiat’s recommend clarity range for Asscher cut diamonds is VS1 to VS2, but on rare occasions, SI1 can look clear to the naked eye as well.
- Our diamonds are the best of their respective clarity grade, and any SI1 Asscher cut diamonds we offer will appear clean to the eye.
CUT
- Cut is the most important qualitative element to consider when selecting an Asscher cut diamond engagement ring.
- A well-cut Asscher cut stone will be bright and lively across the entire diamond and show its size properly. A poorly cut Asscher diamond may have an inconsistent or unattractive brilliance or be overly deep and appear smaller than its true size.
- The GIA does not assign Cut grades for Asscher cut diamonds, which is why trusted professional guidance is so important.
RATIO
- A diamond’s ratio is its length divided by its width.
- For a square shape, our recommended ratio range is 1:1 to 1:1.05.
- The higher the number, the more elongated the Asscher cut diamond will appear.
DEPTH PERCENTAGE
- There is not a rigid set of depth percentage parameters for Asscher cut diamonds.
- Our recommended depth percentage for an Asscher cut diamond ranges from 62 to 69 percent.
- Asscher cut diamonds with depth percentages beyond 70 percent look small for their size because too much weight lies on the stone’s underside.
TABLE PERCENTAGE
- There is not a rigid set of table percentage parameters for Asscher cut diamonds.
- Our recommended table percentage for an Asscher cut diamond ranges from 58 to 68 percent.
- Asscher cut diamonds with tables below 58 percent have high crown angles and look small for their size. Asscher cut diamonds with tables above 68 percent look flat and glassy with less fire reflected from the crown.
